Metal roofing

Metal is the ordinary covering on Nigerian houses and sheds. Saying “metal” is not yet a specification. This page is about the differences that matter before anyone orders a length.

Three families of metal, not one product

Long-span aluminium is the sheet people mean when they point at a contemporary house: long lengths, fewer end laps, a finish that is either plain or pre-coated. Stone-coated metal is a panel system with a granular surface, often chosen because it reads as tile from the street. Older corrugated sheets, aluminium or galvanised, are the legacy covering on bungalows and compounds, fixed with nails that have had decades to enlarge their holes. Micheletti Construction will talk about all three. We will not collapse them into “best roofing material” because that phrase usually means whichever product a supplier is discounting.

The form does not ask you to choose a brand. It asks whether the job is arepair, a replacement, anew roof, or an inspection. The material conversation follows. If you already know which family is on the house, write it in the description. If a neighbour’s roof is the look you want, say that too, and expect us to talk about the structure under your roof rather than copying a street.

What fails is rarely the middle of a new sheet

Cut edges, side laps, ridges, valleys, and fasteners do the failing. A coated sheet can look perfect while the screw and the washer under it have started the leak. Stone-coated panels fail at the interlock and at the hip if the fitting was rushed. Corrugated sheets fail at nail holes and at overlaps that were never wide enough. Cement smeared along a joint is a common previous “repair” and a poor one, because the sheet moves with heat and the cement does not.

Underlay, where it is used, and ventilation of the space under the sheet are part of the same discussion. A metal roof in full sun is a hot roof. Condensation on the underside is a real complaint, and it is not solved by blaming the brand. Gutters and downpipes have to be sized for the storm, not for a light shower. None of this requires us to invent a universal specification in public. It requires the quote to mention these parts so they are not “extras” after the sheet is on.

Coast, dust, and a long damp season

Lagos is the salt problem. Houses on Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, and Ajah see moist air off the Atlantic for most of the year, on top of a rainy season that studies put above 1,800 millimetres a year at Ikeja. A fastener and a cut edge that would be dull but sound in a drier city can pit here. Specification and a realistic view of maintenance belong in the quote. Wind on a tall house is the other Lagos metal issue: edge fixing and verges, not the field of the sheet.

Abuja’s metal roofs collect harmattan dust from about November to February and then meet a single wet season that peaks in late summer. Valleys and gutters full of fines are a standard first-rain repair. Tiles and long-span metal both appear across Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, and Gwarinpa; stone-coated metal is often a look-alike for tile on newer estates. A flat concrete roof is not a metal roof, and we will not quietly call it one. If your house has a slab, say so. The Abuja page explains the climate without turning it into a product claim.

Ibadan’s metal roofs are often older corrugated or early long-span, patched through many wet seasons. The city’s rainfall pattern — March to October, August lull, peaks near June and September, about 1,420 millimetres in the cited study — means a sheet stays damp for a long time even without sea salt. Replacing a patched Bodija or Jericho roof with a new long-span sheet is a common request. It only works if the purlins can take the new fixing pattern. Stone-coated metal on a house that was never framed for it is not an upgrade. It is a weight and a detailing problem. Akobo and Oluyole add newer houses and wider industrial spans, which is a different order of sheet and gutter.

A straight way to ask

Tell us the city, the neighbourhood, the storeys, and which of the three families you think is involved. Photos of the eaves and the ridge from the ground are enough to begin. We will not publish a brand league table or a price per metre. Request a quoteand expect the reply to talk about fasteners and laps, not only about colour.

Questions

Is long-span aluminium the same as stone-coated metal?

No. Long-span aluminium is a sheet, usually in long lengths, with a different look and a different way of failing from stone-coated panels that imitate tiles. Both are metal roofs. They are not interchangeable slogans.

What about older corrugated sheets?

They are still on thousands of houses, especially older Ibadan and mainland Lagos stock. They are usually what a replacement removes. We do not romanticise them, and we do not pretend every old sheet is finished.

Will you recommend a gauge on this page?

No. Thickness, coating, and fastener belong in a specification for a span and a site. A single number in a headline would be advertising, not engineering.

Does metal roofing suit every city you cover?

It is used in Lagos, Abuja, and Ibadan. Salt air, harmattan dust, and long damp seasons stress different parts of the same system. The city changes the detailing, not the fact that metal is common.
